The MHFA Blended Online Course has been adapted from the Standard MHFA Course for adults.

  • Course Component 1 Self-paced interactive eLearning (5-7 hours) covering an overview of mental health problems and mental health crises.
  • Course Component 2 The instructor-led component is delivered via videoconferencing over two sessions of 2.5 hours each. Revise content covered in self-paced eLearning and implement it with practical skills learned in a group environment.

The MHFA training will equip you with the practical skills and knowledge to identify and respond effectively to someone experiencing a mental health problem. Why is mental health first aid important?
By becoming a mental health first aider, you can offer comfort and support in a crisis until professional help arrives. Mental health problems are not as frightening as most people think. When a person has a mental health problem, what they need most is someone who can be there for them and listen to their feelings and concerns non-judgementally. When appropriate, you can give support and information and encourage them to seek professional help and other supports.
What does evidence-based training mean?
MHFA training is developed by MHFA Australia, a national not-for-profit organisation focused on mental health training and research. The course contents are evidence-based. It means the course is based on evidence of what is best practice mental health first aid to support someone who has a mental health problem or is experiencing a mental health crisis. This evidence has been developed in partnership with the University of Melbourne through developing Delphi method guidelines that cover several mental health problems, crises and in different contexts. All MHFA courses are then evaluated, using rigorous scientific methods, to ensure they have a positive impact.
What is mental health first aid in the workplace?
More and more workplaces are realising the impact of mental health problems on their people and productivity. Encouraging early help-seeking is one way to promote a mentally healthy workplace. This is where Mental Health First Aid can help. Mental health first aid is an evidence-based training course that gives your employees the skills and confidence to have supportive conversations with their co-workers and help guide them to professional help if needed. It has been shown to increase knowledge, confidence and helping behaviours, and reduce stigma.
Who can be an MHFA Officers?
People who attend Mental Health First Aid training can complete an online assessment to be accredited as a Mental Health First Aider. The accreditation is valid for three years. Just like appointing physical first aid officers, many organisations choose to appoint accredited Mental Health First Aiders to the role of Mental Health First Aid officer within the workplace. Mental Health First Aid Officers are appointed and supported to: • Provide mental health first aid within their worksite. • Escalate any matters promptly and appropriately according to relevant organisational policy and procedures.
How can I become an accredited Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider)?
Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider) is a person who has completed a MHFA course delivered by an accredited MHFA instructor. As an MHFAider, you can complete an online Accreditation Assessment to become an accredited MHFAider for three years.
Who can deliver MHFA training?
Only the accredited MHFA instructor can deliver MHFA training. Accredited MHFA Instructors are skilled facilitators with a passion for improving the mental health of their communities and workplaces.
Is MHFA training a therapy or counselling course?
MHFA is an education course. The aim is to learn how to give first aid to others, and it is not a therapy, counselling or support group.
